What this glossary is for
Ornithology, like any field, has its own vocabulary — some of it precise scientific terminology, some of it everyday birdwatching shorthand. This glossary collects the terms that appear repeatedly across the atlas's species, family, and regional pages and explains each one in a short, self-contained entry, so you never have to leave a page mid-read to look something up elsewhere.
Entries range from core biological concepts — what distinguishes a migratory bird from a resident one, what happens during molt, how clutch size varies between species — to practical terms used by people who watch or attract birds, such as bird feeders, nest boxes, and ringing programs. Many glossary terms map directly onto fields you'll see on other pages. A species profile might describe a bird as present "April to September" — the glossary entry on migratory birds explains what that pattern means and how it differs from a resident or an irruptive species. A conservation status of "NT" on a species page corresponds to a glossary entry spelling out the full IUCN scale from Least Concern to Extinct.
